The new 4th edition of "The Practical Nomad: How to Travel Around the
World" is now available in bookstores and online, ahead of schedule and in
time for me to sign copies this Thursday in Washington, DC.
I'm excited about the new edition and about the extent to which I've been
able to improve and update it to reflect the latest changes in the world,
in travel, and of course in the (better than ever) 100-page travel
resource guide. If you read and liked one of the previous editions of
"The Practical Nomad", please tell your friends about the new edition.

I'm currently travelling around the world myself on a year-long
sabbatical. But as part of my ongoing work as a consultant to the
Identity Project <http://www.papersplease.org>, I'll be coming back from
Buenos Aires, Argentina to Washington, DC, this week to testify at a
public hearing on Thursday on the TSA's latest proposals for surveillance,
control, and monitoring of travellers, which would require us not only to
have government-issued travel documents but to get permission from the
government before boarding each flight (even domestic flights in the USA),
and subject us to government-compelled search and interrogation by
unregulated, private, commercial third parties who would be "free" to
retain, use, publish, sell, rent, or disclose the records of our travels.
If you're in the Washington area, I encourage you to come to the hearing
yourself and tell the TSA in person what you think of their plans:

This will probably be my only trip back to the USA from my sabbatical this
year, and your only chance in the USA this year to get me to sign copies
of the new 4th edition of "The Practical Nomad: How to Travel Around the
World". I won't have copies of my books with me, so please buy them in
advance and bring them to the hearing if you would like them signed
Please contact me if you are interested in organizing an event in one of
the places I'll be passing through between now and next July:

If you are a book reviewer or interested in arranging an interview by
phone or e-mail, please contact me or the Avalon Travel Publishing
publicity department, +1-510-595-3664, <atppublicity at avalonpub.com>.
In the coming weeks and months, I'll be posting more in my blog and in my
e-mail newsletter about some of the practical lessons for other travellers
of my own current trip, such as how I arranged to manage finances (safely
and securely) while travelling, how to stay in touch while travelling,
what gear and gadgets I did (and didn't) bring with me, and my experiences
of living, volunteering, studying a foreign language, and continuing to do
freelance and consulting work in the USA while travelling abroad.
Thanks for all the support and feedback I've gotten from my readers over
the years. Wherever *you're* travelling, have a wonderful trip!
Best wishes from Buenos Aires,
Edward Hasbrouck
