* New season of "The Amazing Race"
* Upcoming "Practical Nomad" events
* The Identity Project and the freedom to travel

=====

For those of you in the USA, "The Amazing Race 14" starts this Sunday,
February 15th, on CBS (8-9 p.m. ET/PT, 7-8 p.m. CT/MT). I'll have weekly
commentary on each episode, as usual, in this newsletter and online at:

=====

On Wednesday, February 18th, I'll be one of the presenters at the "Pecha
Kucha" night in San Francisco. If you know about Pecha Kucha, you
probably already know that it's an ideal format for travel presentations.
And if you've don't know Pecha Kucha, I think you'll find it a fun
evening. The theme for the night is "Change", and I'll be posing some of
my questions about future changes in travel. 330 Ritch St. (South of
Market). Doors open at 7 p.m.; presentations start at 20:20 (8:20 p.m.):

Thanks to everyone who turned out at Get Lost Books last month to talk
about the current climate for world travel. The room was packed, and I'd
love to have another Bay Area gathering soon for those who weren't able to
make it. If you or your organization have a group of people who are
interested, space for a gathering, and would like to host an event, please
get in touch. I'll be in Europe again for a couple of weeks in March and
April, and I'm tentatively planning another transcontinental road trip in
the USA and Canada this summer. Check my schedule and let me know if
you'd like to set something up while I'm passing through:

=====

In the interim between seasons of "The Amazing Race", much of my new
writing has been published in the Identity Project blog (PapersPlease.org)
on issues of freedom to travel, such as:

ID checks and government logs of hotel guests:

http://www.papersplease.org/wp/2009/02/11/id-checks-and-government-logs-of-
hotel-guests/

The implications of controls on travel for refugees and asylum seekers:

asylum-seekers/

Recommendations for the Obama Administration on the right to travel:

http://www.papersplease.org/wp/2008/11/10/the-obama-administration-and-the-
right-to-travel/

I don't always cross-post these on my own Web site, so follow
"PapersPlease.org" if you are interested in issues like these. Look for
more travel tips and advice in the coming weeks in my own blog.

Bon voyage!
